About this revival

This is an unofficial revival of the LearnDB lookup from Crawl Monster Info. It brings back the old design with live search and DCSS tiles. It uses a fixed LearnDB snapshot; the date is shown under Snapshot details. It also restores monster-stat lookup from the same official Crawl utility used by Gretell.

In a public reply, Sequell host gammafunk said he had taken over hosting from greensnark. The old LearnDB host was down, and the crawl.develz.org lookup would return after he set up a suitable data-mirroring service. Read gammafunk's explanation.

Checked on 5 September 2026: the old lookup returned 404, while the main DCSS website and the current LearnDB data page were available. The data page showed an update dated 5 September 2026. The original lookup may return; its maintainer did not describe it as permanently closed.

Gretell monster statistics

Monster reports are generated with official DCSS releases and a dated trunk build using Crawl’s monster utility, the program used by Gretell. Common DCSS 0.34.1 reports are bundled with this site. Other versions and custom queries use a live calculator.

HP ranges, AC, EV and XP use the utility’s sample of 100 generated monsters. Equipment, spells and other generated traits can vary. These are reference stats, not the exact stats of a monster in your game.

The utility’s Dam field shows base melee damage. It does not include weapon damage. Equipment can change defenses and resistances; this is not a combat damage calculator.

Use the version menu for installed releases and trunk. Custom equipment, enchantments and spells use Crawl’s monster specification syntax. Trunk reports show the exact build, source commit and build date. Trunk is a tested build, not a promise to include every new commit immediately.

The version choice affects monster stats only. LearnDB text and tiles keep their own snapshot dates and versions. Queries sent to the calculator are not stored in application logs; successful reports are cached in memory. The service applies request and time limits. If it is unavailable, saved 0.34.1 reports still work.

Traffic analytics

This site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to measure visits, page views, referral sources, device types and page performance. It does not use analytics cookies or track people across websites. Cloudflare does not log URL query strings in Web Analytics. Typed searches do not count as extra page views.

Analytics requests include the site origin as their HTTP referrer, without the search text. Browser blockers can prevent measurements. About Cloudflare Web Analytics.

Tile artwork

This site uses tiles from DCSS 0.34.1 for 1477 LearnDB topics. Result tiles appear at twice their original size; suggestion tiles use their original size. Aliases and numbered entries use the tile for their topic.

Some topics describe more than one thing. These use a representative tile. A tile shows appearance; it does not add monster statistics or update the LearnDB text. Topics without a clear match remain text-only.

The tile sheet is a fixed copy, stored with this site. It does not fetch images from a game server.

Sources and notices

The artwork keeps its upstream licenses. The DCSS license describes the mixed licensing of older tiles; this site does not relabel all artwork as CC0.

Original site design

The colors, typography, controls, and background artwork come from the archived Crawl Monster Info site. The background is its original Sigmund artwork. The interface adapts that layout for live LearnDB lookup and small screens.
